Two basins for an orchid grower, Mexico

This month our welding team crossed the ocean! In Hidalgo, Mexico, they installed films in two basins at an orchid grower.

Water is becoming more and more scarce in Mexico and the government undertakes action. They passed a law with stricter control over water rights and concessions and authorities will monitor water use in agriculture and industry more closely. As a result, growers and farmers need better water efficiency and storage capacity.

Also this grower required more buffer storage and ordered two basins. Initially the plan was to install only one basin as the grower plans to expand the greenhouses anytime soon. However, due to Mexico’s new water regulations, the grower decided to install both basins.   

This orchid grower in Hidalgo produces orchids of the highest quality on two hectares in Mexico and Latin America. They equipped their greenhouses with modern tools such as underfloor heating, CO2, humidity and shadow control and automated drip irrigation. This enables them to produce orchids of higher standards compared to other growers in the country.

These high quality orchids require a constant and reliable water supply, making water storage essential. One basin was excavated, while the second basin was installed at ground level. This basin can be dismantled once the greenhouses will be expanded. The excavated basin will remain permanently in place and will store enormous volumes of water. Both basins will collect rainwater. This fits perfectly with the approach of the Mexican government, which considers rainwater harvesting a key solution for meeting future water needs.
