Water management is a major challenge on Bonaire. Part of the year the island is extremely dry, while during the rainy season parts of Kralendijk can flood. Groundwater is saline and Bonaire has no natural freshwater sources. Capturing and storing rainwater is therefore essential. The island, and our customer as well, are investing in solutions to become more climate resilient.
Horticulture
Bonaire’s warm climate is suitable for growing certain crops, but it also brings challenges. Water is the biggest challenge for the island’s relatively small horticultural sector. Many crops are grown in greenhouses.
Hydroponic greenhouses
One example is our customer, who grows crops in hydroponic greenhouses tailored for tropical island conditions. The farm is designed to optimize space, energy use and water conservation while maintaining consistent, year-round crop production. They grow different varieties of lettuce and culinary herbs, supplying hotels, resorts, restaurants, caterers, local supermarkets and shops.
Three water tanks
NPI International supplied water tanks for this farm. One large tank (Ø 4.57 m × 3.81 m high) and two smaller tanks (Ø 1.83 m × 1.52 m high) were installed.
One thing that stood out was that all three tanks were ordered completely coated in a clean white finish. The full coating protects the steel against the salty sea air, while the white colour reflects sunlight to keep both the tank and the water cooler. It also gives the tanks a clean, modern appearance that matches the farm.
Efficient irrigation
Each plant is grown under strict quality controls to ensure maximum freshness and nutrient content. Efficient irrigation is therefore essential, especially on Bonaire.
The water tanks enable the customer to collect rainwater and create a reliable water buffer for efficient irrigation. They help the farm stay prepared for temporary disruptions, supporting consistent, year-round crop production.
