Exploring the benefits of steel water tanks for reliable and efficient water storage

Water storage tanks are indispensable in horticulture, but also in many other applications. On farms, in fish farming, fire fighting and in industries. Drought is an increasing problem worldwide, and fortunately, more and more companies and sectors are recognizing that water storage is essential.

Water has been stored for centuries. Even today, there are various systems available for storing water. In addition to steel water tanks, different kinds of polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC and concrete tanks are used to store water. Each type comes with its own set of pros and cons. Overall and in the long term, steel water tanks offer strong long‑term benefits. We will explain why.

1. Durability

Steel water tanks are highly durable. The exact number of years a water tank will last cannot be specified, as this depends on several factors, such as the geographic location, type of environment, cleaning methods and maintenance.

Steel

What we do know is that steel water tanks outperform many other types of water storage systems. Plastic tanks or mesh tanks are budget-friendly, but exposure to the elements has shown the replacement time for these tanks is much shorter. Steel water tanks are manufactured from the highest quality galvanised steel (MagiZinc) with excellent corrosion resistance. To make the steel even more durable, options such as increasing sheet thickness or powder coating one or several rings of the tank, or even the entire tank, can be chosen. This provides extra protection for the steel, and with proper maintenance – with minimal effort – the steel will last for decades.

Liner

The interior of the tank is lined with a high quality film, manufactured as a 3D bag that fits seamlessly in the metal structure. The liner is most of the times produced of ENPEX FPP, which is nowadays the golden standard for lining material. This film offers excellent resistance against UV and weathering, offers good performance in high temperatures and also combines great mechanical properties with a wide range of chemical resistance. ENPEX FPP is food safe, chemically inert and an intrinsically flexible polymer that does not require additional plasticizers. It is very flexible and has excellent dimensional stability and wide temperature range.

NPI usually supplies ENPEX FPP in thicknesses of 0,6 mm, 0,75 mm and 1,0 mm, even to climatically demanding regions worldwide. The longevity of a liner is also influenced by various factors, but with proper use and maintenance, the liner will last for many years too. The ability of ENPEX FPP to be prefabricated and folded for transport to the installation site in large ready-to-use surfaces, offers a significant reduction in welding and installation time compared to the more rigid types of geomembranes.

2. Simple installation

This brings us to the following pro; steel water tanks are very easy to install. It only requires a few basic tools and one or two teams. No special skills or tools are needed. While other basins can be labor-intensive to install, metal water tanks just require some manpower to tighten all the bolts and nuts!

3. Control over water quality and quantity

Steel water tanks offer excellent control of water quality thanks to their sealed design, which prevents contamination from dirt, algae and bacteria. The protection is even better with a cover in place. Steel water tanks also offer control over water quantity due to their customizable size, strong structure that prevents leaks, and the ease of checking the water level, ensuring accurate monitoring.

4. Large capacity on a small area

She strong structures of steel water tanks allow them to be high and hold a large volume without needing much ground space. This vertical design makes them ideal for storing large volumes of water on a small area. It is the perfect solution when not much space is available.

5. Wide range of sizes; up to 2500 m³

We manufacture steel water tanks to measure. This way, we can offer our customers standard sizes ranging from 2 m3 to 2500 m3. Their customisable dimensions make them suitable for operations of any scale. While polyethylene storage systems may seem more effective at some sizes, they are limited in capacity. Steel water tanks can have diameters of up to 30 meters and heights of up to 3 meters.

6. Modularity

Unlike concrete and plastic tanks, steel water tanks are delivered as a complete construction kit on a compact pallet. This pallet contains the steel sheets, protective felt, liner, optional cover and all necessary accessories. Thanks to their modularity, these water silos can be installed almost anywhere. Even deep in the forest, on a mountain or in the desert. They can also be relocated if needed. Additionally, new parts can be added without having to replace the entire system, saving both time and money.

The compact sizes of our efficiently packed water tanks on pallets also enable cost-effective, worldwide transport.

Silent forces that keep your business running

Many water storage options are available worldwide. Steel water tanks, with their long lifespan, easy installation and adaptability, offer a reliable and efficient solution on the long term. Their capacities matches every operation, crop area and irrigation needs, they are durable, uv-resistant and food-safe. Besides, professional connections and accessories are available, such as inlets, outlets and covers. Steel water tanks require minimum maintenance and they will truly work as the silent forces that keep your business running smoothly.

No wonder we are seeing more and more businesses choose steel water tanks for their flexibility and durability. They provide the most reliable and secure supply of good quality water for your crops!
