Ensuring water quality: essential elements of a potable water tank

Many NPI tanks are used in drinking water projects around the world: from community water supplies to drinking water treatment facilities. When storing potable water, reliability and safety are even more critical. Certification is essential, as it confirms and justifies that a tank can be safely used for drinking water storage.

In this blog, we explain how our tanks offer a safe, certified solution for potable water storage and which key tank components you should pay attention to.

Lining material: CP liner

To guarantee the quality and safety of the drinking water stored, we carefully select the lining materials for drinking water storage. They must comply with international standards and be certified for contact with drinking water.

Our CP liner (Chlorine and Potable liner) is fully drinking water certified. This certification confirms that the material does not leach harmful substances into potable water and that it has passed documented chemical composition checks, extraction testing and independent certification. It ensures the liner can remain in continuous contact with drinking water without affecting its quality, safety, taste or odor.

The CP liner also withstands higher chlorine concentrations, which is especially useful in sectors or regions where chlorine is frequently used to clean or disinfect water systems.

Cover: steel roof

When storing drinking water, it is of utmost importance that a tank is completely sealed, ensuring that nothing can enter. This keeps the water in perfect condition and maintains its quality.

Steel roof

Covering a drinking water tank with a steel roof is a must. The steel roof is the most robust and advanced type of tank cover on the market. The steel roof is easy to install and consists of lightweight, easy-to-handle panels that are linked together to create a watertight structure. Each roof is supplied with two access hatches as standard. Our galvanised steel roof is suitable for tanks with a diameter of up to 14.63 meters.

Centre pole in a drinking water tank

A centre pole supports the steel roof from the middle of the tank. Tanks up to 11.89 m have one centre pole; larger tanks require additional poles depending on the diameter. Because the steel centre pole should never be in direct contact with drinking water, each pole must be fully covered to prevent corrosion or contamination. We therefore supply protective sleeves for all (centre) poles. These sleeves are not listed in our portal, so please contact us directly for drinking water projects.

Side-wall outlets

Also in drinking water tanks inlets and outlets need to be installed. It is essential that these connections are drinking water safe. NPI supplies stainless steel outlets or WRAS approved plastic outlets. These outlets don’t leave any harmful substances to the water and therefore they are suitable to use in drinking water projects. These specific outlets are not listed in our portal, so please contact us directly for drinking water projects.

Our added value

In addition to meeting all requirements for drinking water storage, all our tanks are fully customised to match the specific needs of each project. With more than 400 standard sizes available (from 2 to 2,000 m³), we ensure there is always a suitable option for your project.

Our tanks are durable, long-lasting, easy to install and modular, meaning they can be installed on any location and tailored to specific site conditions.
