A few practical guidelines for using your water tank during the colder months
As temperatures start to drop and autumn and winter approach in the northern hemisphere, it is important to keep a few practical guidelines in mind for using your water tank. Having a water tank in operation is straightforward and simple, but to get you through the season without any issues, we have listed a few key recommendations for winter use and maintenance.
Inspection before winter sets in
For a steel water tank, it is important to check both the tank and the liner before winter. Any damage can worsen when exposed to freezing temperatures or strong winds.
Keep the tank stable
During winter, it is best to keep the tank as full as possible. When the tank is full, the weight of the water helps stabilise it and makes it more resistant to strong winds. Of course, always keep an eye on the freeboard; there should be enough space between the water surface and the top edge of the tank.
When temperatures drop below zero
- If the water in your tank freezes or if there is a layer of ice on the surface, it is important not to drain or move the water. The pressure differences and sharp ice edges can cause damage to the liner.
- Avoid walking on the liner or carrying out cleaning or repair work in freezing conditions.
- Also, make sure all pipes and connections are frost-proof. Freezing water can expand and cause cracks or leaks, both in fittings and in the liner itself.
Covers and floating sheets
When autumn starts, it is time to remove your anti-algae cover, give it a thorough cleaning and store it until spring. Large amounts of rain water, snow or leaves can cause sagging of the cover and would put extra stress on the structure. To avoid this, remove the cover. We also advise to remove floating covers in autumn. Read more about anti-algae covers in wintertime.
Inspect and act quickly
Regular visual inspection is the best way to keep your water tank in good condition. If you notice any damage to the tank wall, liner or cover, make sure to repair it immediately.
In short, a few simple checks and preventive steps can make a big difference. This way you ensure that your tank, liner and cover stay in good shape throughout the cold season.
