Desalination water tank, Thailand

Water storage for desalination

At Koh Sichang, our dealer installed this 100 m3 tank for storing water for a desalination plant. The tank serves as a holding reservoir where seawater or brackish water is stored before undergoing desalination to convert it into fresh water. This way, the water tank contributes to ensuring water supply for the island’s residents and facilities.

Desalination for coastal water supply

The main sources of drinking water in Thailand are surface water and groundwater. Along the coast, excessive groundwater withdrawal causes salty water to mix with freshwater underground. To address this, desalination plants are being built in coastal areas. Desalination is a good option to meet the growing water demand. The market for desalinated water in the region is developing and is mostly has small-scale plants like the mentioned plant.

Properties of the water tank

The water tank is installed on a concrete foundation and is further secured by tank base brackets. The bottom ring is coated, providing extra protection for the tank. We always recommend this, but especially in areas like this, where the tank is close to the coast and exposed to salty sea air. The tank is covered by a tensioned anti-algae cover made of geotextile. This fabric allows water to pass through while keeping dirt out of the tank. The cover also protects against sunlight, reducing the chances of algae growth and minimizing evaporation.
