Tomatoes and cucumbers in Cyprus
Cucumbers and tomatoes are essential staples in Cyprus and play a vital role in Mediterranean cuisine. Throughout the year, dozens of varieties of these vegetables are grown in tunnels and outdoor cultivations, supporting the island’s horticulture industry. However, climate change—marked by rising temperatures and reduced rainfall—poses a significant threat to their production. This is especially true in the spring and summer months, when extreme weather conditions can affect both the quality and yield of these crops.
Water storage as measure
Proposed measures include sustainable use of water resources. Special attention should be paid to improved irrigation management, whereby water storage is indispensable. This nursery opted for the installation of a steel water tank, which collects rainwater and can, to a limited extent, also store surface water and pumped groundwater. This way, a constant water supply for the vegetables in guaranteed.
Properties of the water tank
Through our dealer, a steel water tank at the cultivation was installed. The water tank has a height of 2,28 meters and a diameter of ca. 10 meters. The water tank is covered by a tensioned anti-algae cover. This geotextile cover is water permeable but blocks the sun, which is important in preventing the growth of algae. The cover also make sure no leaves or dirt can enter the tank.
